First Grade: Where Big Learning Begins!
First graders can expect to build strong foundations in reading, writing, and math while exploring basic science and social studies concepts. A first grader in Mount Vernon School District will build foundational skills in reading and writing, including decoding words, reading longer texts, and writing complete sentences. In math, students focus on addition and subtraction within 20, understanding place value, and solving simple word problems. They will explore basic science topics like weather, habitats, and physical properties through hands-on activities. Additionally, students develop social studies knowledge about communities, maps, and citizenship, while growing socially and emotionally through collaboration and creativity in art, music, and physical education.
