Library

Where Stories Begin and Readers Grow
Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are.
The library is a welcoming learning space where students in kindergarten through fifth grade develop a love of reading, curiosity, and lifelong learning through a diverse collection of books and resources. Through regular visits, students enjoy read-alouds, explore new authors and genres, and build literacy, research, and digital citizenship skills in a supportive and engaging environment.

Library Checkout Procedures

As we continually strive to enhance communication between Mount Vernon City Schools and our valued parents, we would like to bring to your attention some important updates regarding our library book check-out procedures.
Currently, we allow students to select books of interest from their building library. Once a book is checked out, parents are notified by email of their child's selection including Title and Author. If you feel comfortable with the current checkout procedures that we have used for many years then you don't need to do anything.
We recognize that there may be some Parents/Guardians who would like to be notified and approve their child's selection before checking out a book. We believe we can accommodate your wishes by completing the permission notification form #1 attached to this email and located on the district website.
Additionally, we recognize that some students often demonstrate more mature reading abilities and interests. If you believe your child fits into this category, as a Parent/Guardian you can grant permission to allow your child the opportunity to check out books that may be more mature in terms of interest and reading abilities. We believe we can accommodate your wishes by completing the permission notification form #2 attached to this email and located on the district website.
Please review and use these forms:
Return the completed form(s) to your school office. Your cooperation is invaluable in tailoring our resources to meet individual student needs and your responses will be handled confidentially.

How do you know if a book is "just right" for you?
- Pick up a book you find interesting!
- Open it up.
- Try reading the first page. Put a finger up for each word you cannot read, if you have five fingers up it is probably too hard and you should try a different book.
- Read a page or two more. Can you read it smoothly? Do you understand what is going on? If yes, you found a "just right" book. Enjoy! If no, try a different one.
